where? is a transitional gallery space in Ōtautahi, focussing on exhibiting a diverse range of artists in terms of identity, practice, and career stage.
In practice this translates to a commitment to exhibiting and working with marginalised artists and communities. where? recognises that the arts industry and the institutions are often unsafe or otherwise inaccessible and aims to work against this. There is no space for racism, transphobia, queerphobia, misogyny, ableism, classism, or sexual abuse at where? events. A full safe space & operations policy is being developed and will be made public.
where? events, wherever possible, will be accessible. Specifically this means (but is not limited to) wheelchair access to entrances and bathrooms, gender neutral bathrooms, seating, use of microphones, and audio recordings of any talks or panels with transcriptions being made available online. For each event these accessibility issues will be confirmed; in the event any are not possible due to venue limitations, where? will inform guests ahead of time and will aim to work together with both venue and audience to ensure equitable access.
where? is currently facilitated/curated/operated by Jennifer Katherine Shields.
